Eagle coach Lee Powell had special praise for his linebackers.
... "They came through, especially senior Jim Dosztal" ...
Both teams played solid defense at the start, forcing punts on opening possessions. The Avon punt was a coffin corner shot by Dosztal that pinned the Clippers back on their own 4-yard line.
Three plays later Dosztal got the game's first points when he tackled the Clearview back in the end zone for a safety with 5:15 to play in the first quarter.
A little over a minute later, Dosztal struck again with a 1-yard touchdown run.

The Eagles were not finished with their first - period scoring as Jake Schober found the end zone with a 24-yard run and then added the extra point to give Avon a 15 - 0 lead.
On the following kickoff, Avon's Ken Brunner fell on a muffed catch at the Clearview 25.
Five plays later junior Erik Gorman took the ball over from 7 yards out, and the Schober kick gave the Eagles a 22 -0 advantage ...
Early in the second half the clippers took advantage of an Avon fumble to move the ball to the Avon 5.
But a Woskobunik pass was picked off by senior linebacker Jamie Wimmer, who raced down the sideline for ... 90 yards ...

[Then] Eagle freshman Dan Siegfried made his first varsity touchdown.
Five minutes later, Avon's final score was set up in a similar fashion.
Clearview drove to the Avon 6 when sophomore cornerback Jason O'Rourke intercepted a pass and raced 85 yards before Murphy, last spring's state sprint champion, again pulled the runner down.
[Patrick Henry then completed a pass to Matt Miesle]; and Schober scored the touchdown.
Avon followed with a 2-point conversion."
