Minutes of the Avon Historical Society, 6-1-16

  • 9-- 10-11 -- 2016: Fall Into Avon


    President Ralph White called the meeting to order at 7:05 p.m. The minutes of the May 4, 2016 meeting were approved as read with Jean Fischer making the motion and Stan Hawryluk seconding.

    6 members were present.

    Treasurer Christine White reported a balance of $5,112.68 in the checking ac count. There were no new bills to present.

    In old business: Flowers were purchased from County Line Farm on Detroit Road and Jim Szippl planted them in the flower boxes. Jim will also water and take care of them . Jim had also talked with Mayor Jensen about the roof and getting it fixed. Mike Farmer, the service director, was also asked about it. They are trying to find plasterers. It was also noted that the bricks near the entrance to the hall are deteriorating. Ralph is to take to Mike about this.

    In new business: Reminder that we are breaking for the summer and the next meeting will be in September (9-7-16).

    Stan Hawryluk would like to organize a field trip to railroad museum in Bell evue for the 3rd Sunday in July. There will be an email invitation and thos e interested should call Stan at 934.0224. Ralph updated on the Landmarks Preservation Commission. There was an applic ation for a demolition permit for 3490 Long Road. Then new owners of the 19 48 bungalow want to tear the house down to build new. The Commission sent 2 letters to historic home owners. One for 37485 Detroi t Road and the other for 39351 Detroit Road, which is the Ezra Jackson House at the corner of Detroit and Case Roads. The Commission also plans to nominate Dairy Treat on Colorado as a Landmark .

    The meeting was adjourned at 7:20 pm with Stan. making the motion and Jean s econding.

    The next regular meeting of the Avon Historical Society will be held at 7 pm on Wednesday, September 7, 2016, at the Old Town Hall of 1871, southeast corner of Detroit and Stoney Ridge.

    "Fall Into Avon" (September 10-11, 2016) will be set up at a new location -- the Village School building grounds on Detroit Road -- which is a more central location.
