The members of the Avon Historical Society met at 8:00 p.m. at The 103rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry in Sheffield Lake, Ohio, for a tour of their facility with 19 members present. Prior to the tour a short business meeting was held.
The meeting was opened by President Mike Wolfe who announced to the group that he was tendering his resignation as he and Barb will be enjoying their retirement and have a full travel itinerary coming up. Mike then recognized Dr. Fischer.
Dr. Fischer reported that he and the other members of the Board of Trustees, Bill Furnace and Jim Szippl had met after being informed by Mike of his resignation.
They have nominated our current Vice-President, Jack Smith to move up to the office of President and have nominated Anna Allen to fill the office of Vice-President. For the record our current Treasurer, Barb Wolf and current Secretary, Nancy McGhee will remain in their offices.
Mike Wolf then asked if there were any further nominations from the floor. There being no further nominations, a motion was made by Dr. Fisher and seconded by Theresa Szippl to accept the nomination of Jack Smith as President and Anna Allen as Vice-President. The motion was unanimously accepted.
Jack Smith then proceeded with the meeting and stated that in view of the fact that the minutes to our last regular meeting were mailed to all members and in the interest of time, he would like to entertain a motion to waive the reading of the minutes as prepared. A motion was made by Anna Allen and seconded by Mike Wolfe to waive the reading of the minutes which motion was unanimously carried.
Jack further stated that there were additional copies of the minutes for our newer members who may not have received a copy.
He then asked the treasurer Barb Wolfe for a short treasurer's report. Barb reported that we have a current balance of $629.92 in our checking account. $485.00 of that amount is the result of recent dues and donations. Our money market account has a current balance of $4,761.76.
Moving along Jack wanted to bring members up to speed on some upcoming dates and events that are just around the corner. He reported that next Monday, October 8, 2001, at 7:00 p.m. there will be a special business meeting at The Old Town Hall to catch up on all of our regular business that needs to be taken care of since the Norton Townshend dedication and the summer recess.
Jack then asked Jean Fischer to report on the Intersociety Pot Luck Picnic. Jean stated that this coming Saturday, October 6, 2001, there would be an Inter-Society Picnic at Mill Hollow Park in Vermilion at 1:00 p.m.
This is a combined meeting/picnic of all of the historical societies of Lorain County. Everyone is invited and is to bring their own table service and a dish to share. Hot dogs and beverages will be provided.
An issue to be discussed at the meeting will be the fact that the county commissioners are prepared to give $60,000.00 to Lorain County historical societies and Avon as well can apply for our share.
Jean further reported that for our next meeting November 5, 2001 at 7:00 p.m. our speaker will be Jack Perry, a history teacher from Wellington, who will vividly portray the life of Sgt. York.
There being no further business to conduct, a motion was made by Jim Szippl to adjourn the meeting which motion was seconded by Jean Fischer and unanimously passed.
The members then were given a historical background of The 103rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry by Olive and Bob Gerber followed by a tour of the museum.
Respectfully submitted, Nancy McGhee, Secretary
