Y2K Sock Hop

The Knights of Columbus Y2K Sock Hop will be Saturday, March 4 at 7 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus Hall, 1783 Moore Road, Avon. Music of the '50s, '60s and '70s features Eddie & the Edsels. Buffet dinner and door prizes are included for a donation of $15. For reservations, call Vic Sedivec, 1-888-899-3219, or buy tickets at the Avon Sun Store.

High school musical

The musical revue 'South Pacific' will be presented tomorrow and Saturday at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 3 p.m. at Avon High School. Students will present the Rodgers and Hammerstein production.

Here's a look at what's cooking in the Avon schools from March 2 to 9:

AVON VILLAGE

- Today: Salisbury steak, mashed potatoes with gravy, broccoli, peach cup

- Friday: Grilled cheese, tomato soup, pineapple tidbits

- Monday: Chicken nuggets, rice pilaf, carrot coins, mixed fruit cup

- Tuesday: Hot ham and cheese sandwich, baked beans, pretzel rod, diced pears

- Wednesday: Cheese pizza, buttered corn, fruit cup

- Thursday: Rotini with meat sauce, soft bread stick, tossed salad, diced peaches

AVON MIDDLE

- Today: Salisbury steak, mashed potatoes with gravy, broccoli, diced peaches

- Friday: Grilled cheese, tomato soup, hashbrowns, pineapple tidbits

- Monday: Chicken nuggets, rice pilaf, carrot coins, mixed fruit

- Tuesday: Hot ham and cheese sandwich, baked beans, diced pears

- Wednesday: Cheese pizza, buttered corn, fruit cup

- Thursday: Spaghetti with meat sauce, soft breadstick, tossed salad, diced peaches

AVON HIGH SCHOOL

- Today: Turkey and cheese wrap, bean salad

- Friday: Grilled cheese, tomato soup

- Monday: Chicken nuggets, rice pilaf, fruit cocktail

- Tuesday: Philly cheesesteak, baked beans

- Wednesday: Tuna melt or footlong Coney

- Thursday: Pancakes, sausage links, hashbrowns, orange juice

Free tax tips

Wendy Wills will present a free program, 'Tax Tips 2000,' Sunday, March 12 and Sunday, April 2 at 2 p.m. in the Avon Branch Library. The two-part program will be about changes in tax laws, will give tips on searching for deductions and will offer ways to save future payments. Preregistration is required by calling 934-4743.

Band boosters community project

Avon Middle School band boosters will be selling paper links for a chain for their annual Community Service Project. Proceeds will help the Avon Fire Department in purchasing educational materials and equipment. On Friday, March 31 at 2 p.m., a school assembly will be on fire safety techniques. Prizes, including movies passes and certificates, will be given to winners selected from all the links on the various class chains.

Book drive at wholesale club

As part of the 'Read Across America' celebration March 4, BJ's Wholesale Club will host a BJ's Buddies Table, where kids are invited to decorate bookmarks to accompany a book donation. The book drive for new and gently used books continues through March 4. Books will benefit the Adult Basic Literacy Education Program. At 1 p.m., community organizations will participate in a reading corner. The event is noon to 4 p.m. at BJ's Wholesale Club, 38292 Colorado Ave., Avon.

New 4-H club officers

At the January meeting of Avon's Another 4-H Club, new officers were elected. They are: Jessica Beckwith, president; Katie Steele, vice president; Kara Shuder, secretary; Kyle Parker, treasurer; Emily Wysocki; and Karie Spaetzel, news reporter . Advisors also have been added: Tracey Dodsley, Matt Klingshirn and Linda Rink. Pat Klingshirn is head advisor. For more information, call 934-6334.

Safety Town sessions

The Avon Village PTA is offering Safety Town for all children entering kindergarten this fall. Sessions will be June 12 to 16 and June 19 to 23, for a period of two hours for one week. Three times may be chosen from: 8 to 10 a.m., 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., or 1 to 3 p.m. The fee is $20 per child, payable at the time of registration, which will be during kindergarten screening at Avon Village School. Club members visit churches

The Avon Research Club will be visiting three Avon churches Friday, March 10. Members are to meet at 12:30 p.m. in the parking area behind the Avon Police Department. The churches include Christian Heritage Church, Holy Trinity Catholic and St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. A tea will follow at the Gallery Tree House.

Library's book sale

The Avon Branch Library will hold its next book sale Friday, March 17, noon to 6 p.m.; Saturday, March 18, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Sunday, March 19, 1 to 4 p.m. Friends of the Avon Library is sponsoring the event.
