Fishing derby: The Avon Lions Club annual fishing derby will be Saturday, June 8, from 8 to 10 a.m. at Northgate Park across from the Avon Community Center.

The event is free and open to all Avon girls and boys 15 years or younger. Contestants will register at the Community Center at 8 a.m. with fishing to begin at 8:30 a.m. Each contestant must have a sponsor 21 years or older.

Those who do not have a sponsor can be sponsored by a Lions Club member by calling John Aunspaw at 934-6311. Each fish caught will be measured and recorded with prizes awarded at the end of the derby for the largest fish caught for each kind of fish, along with a host of other prizes.

Baby-sitting course: The American Red Cross, Lorain County Chapter and the Avon Branch Library will offer a baby-sitting basics course June 15 and 22 from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Avon Library.

Targeted for ages 11 through 15, the course teaches ideas for fun and games, infant and young child-care, safety and infant and child first aid. Participants must attend both sessions to receive American Red Cross baby-sitting certification.

Cost is $30, which includes a textbook and first aid kit. All students must pre-register by mailing in or dropping off payment to the American Red Cross, Lorain County Chapter, 2929 W. River Road North, Elyria 44035. Class size is limited. For information, call 324-2929.

Learn to swim: The Avon Recreation Department will offer swimming lessons for Avon residents ages 3 and up through the Carousel Swim Club. Classes will be Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 9, 10 and 11 a.m. Session one is June 10 to 21, session two is June 24 to July 5, session three is July 8 to 19, session four is July 22 to Aug. 9, and session five is Aug. 12 to 23.

Cost is $50 per session. Summer memberships to the pool are also available to Avon residents at a discount rate through June 1. Call Denise at 949-7036 for information.

Meeting of the Avon Historical Society: The Avon Historical Society will have a business meeting on Monday, June 3, at 7 pm at the Old Town Hall, corner of Detroit and Stoney Ridge. Some results of the "slides to dvd" project will be shown.

Historic preservation: The Avon Planning Commission will hold a work session on Wednesday, June 12, 2002 at 7:30 p.m. to examine and discuss strategies and tools to maintain and preserve the 'sense of place' in Avon and to preserve it's older and historic structures. The location is City Hall at Chester and SR-83.
