Avon Historical Society: May 5, 6 and 7, 2003 are the Avon days at the French Creek Nature Center Bicentennial exhibition in Sheffield (4530 Colorado)

Monday, May 5th at 7 pm is the regular monthly meeting of the Avon Historical Society, which as always is open to the public. The program is a tour of the exhibition.

The public and Avon city officials are invited to a reception hosted by the Avon Historical Society, at the French Creek Nature Center Bicentennial exhibition in Sheffield on Tuesday, May 6 at 7 pm at the French Creek Nature Center. The French Creek Association will be giving demonstrations that evening. Also, the French Creek Development Association will hold its monthly meeting at the Nature Center followed by a tour of the exhibition.

The public is invited by the Avon Historical Society to a lecture on Wednesday, May 7, at 7 pm at the French Creek Nature Center Bicentennial exhibition in Sheffield. Bill Balunek will speak on the history of aviation in Lorain County and Ohio.

Saddle up: The Avon Recreation Department is offering several different riding lessons at Ponytales Farm, 10835 Avon Belden Road. For ages 2 to 5, a ponycamp jr. will be offered Thursdays, May 15 to 22, from 4 to 4:45 p.m. Cost is $24. For ages 2 to 12, a class will be offered Wednesdays for four weeks, from 4 to 5 p.m., May 7 to 28.

Cost is $60. If you would just like to spend a day at the stables to see if your child would be interested, riding lessons will be offered Saturday, May 2 from 2:15 to 3:15 p.m. Camps will also be offered during the summer months. Successful fund-raiser: The Avon Junior Women's Club has announced that more than $15,000 was raised at its annual fund-raiser, March Magic, held March 29. The proceeds will be distributed to this year's beneficiaries, which are the Avon Band Boosters, Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, Northern Ohio Down Syndrome Society, The Women's Fund of Lorain County, and the AJWC college scholarship fund.

Book talk: The Mother/Daughter Book Group will meet May 27 at 7:30 p.m. at the Avon Branch Library. The group is open to mothers and their daughters who are in the fourth through eighth grades. ''Woman in the Wall'' will be discussed. Copies of the book are available at the library. For information, call 934-4743.

Card party: St. Mary Card Party will be held tomorrow at Tom's Country Place beginning at noon.Tickets are $7 and reservations must be made by calling 934-5722.

Scholarship: The Avon Junior Women's Club are accepting applications for their annual college scholarship of $1,000 to help women returning to college in an effort to obtain their educational goals. An application can be obtained from the Avon Junior Women's Club Web site at www.ajwc.org. Completed applications must be submitted by April 30 to Avon Junior Women's Club, P.O. Box 131, Avon, OH 44011. The award will be presented in May.
