Avon Historical Society: The Avon Historical Society will meet at 7 pm on Monday, 4-7-03, at the Old Town Hall of 1871, corner of Detroit Rd. and Stoney Ridge Road. Millie Arthrell will present the life of Theodore Rosevelt.
OPERATION HOPE: This is a grass roots effort to support our POW's and MIA's in Iraq and, hopefully, provides some comfort to their families. There will be a "Kick-Off" ceremony on Sunday, April 13th at 1:00 p.m. in Avon, Ohio at the Gazebo located on the corner of Routes 611 & 254 [Stoney Ridge and Detroit]. Eagles on display: Avon school's mascot, the eagle, has become the focal point of Avon's participation in Ohio's Bicentennial. Cast stone eagles were provided to the art classes of all Avon schools for students to decorate.
They will be displayed for a judging contest Saturday [4-5-03 at the Spring Fling] and Sunday at the gazebo at Heritage Square, French Creek. The public is welcome to attend the contest and vote for your favorite eagle.
Safety program: Avon Village School will sponsor an Escape School assembly, Thursday at 7 p.m. in the auditorium. Attend and bring your children for the safety program reviewing "stranger danger" strategies. For information, call 934-5124.
Baby-sitting course: The American Red Cross and the Avon Branch Library will offer a baby-sitting basics course Saturday and April 12 from 10:30 to 2 p.m. Targeted for 11- through 15-year-olds, the course teaches ideas for fun and games, infant and young child-care, safety, and infant and child first aid.
Participants must attend both sessions to receive American Red Cross baby-sitting certification. Cost is $35, which includes a textbook and first aid kit. Students must pre-register by mailing in or dropping off payment to the Red Cross, Lorain County Chapter, 2929 W. River Road North, Elyria. For information, call 324-2929.
CPR classes: The Avon Recreation Department will sponsor an adult heart saver CPR class April 8 from 7 to 9 p.m. and a pediatric heart saver CPR class April 15 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Avenbury Lakes Lodge, 35400 Middleton Ave. You must attend the April 8 class to attend the April 15 class. Cost is $5 and you must be at least 13 years old to attend. Call (800) 223-8662, to register.
