Avon Historical Society: The historical society will meet Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the Old Town Hall, Detroit and Stoney Ridge roads, for a presentation about Civil War Gen. James Birdseye McPherson. For more information, contact Dr. Delbert Fischer at 934-6106

French Creek Development: The French Creek Development Association will meet Tuesday, Nov. 9, at 7:30 p.m. at the Old Town Hall, corner of Detroit and Stoney Ridge roads. Safety check: The Lorain County Safe Community Coalition and the Avon Fire Department are teaming up to distribute booster seats and check car seats from 2:30 to 5 p.m. Nov. 9 at the Avon Fire Department, 36185 Detroit Road, Avon. Appointments are recommended; call 244-2209.

Veterans Day open house: Avenbury Lakes Lodge is having a Veterans Day Open House to honor American veterans on Nov. 11 from 1 to 4 p.m. Avenbury Lakes is located at 35400 Middleton Ave., Avon. The Southview High School Jr. ROTC Color Guard will attend. Invocation will be given by the Rev. J. Scott Patterson, Dover Congregational United Church of Christ. Proclamation by Avon Mayor James A. Smith will recognize Avenbury Lakes veterans. There will be a social time and light refreshments.

Book talk: Adults may join the Evening Book Discussion Group when it meets Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the Avon Branch Library, 37485 Harvest Drive, Avon. The book to be discussed will be ''The Da Vinci Code.'' Copies of the book are available at the library. New members are welcome. Call the library at 934-4743, for more information.
