School starts Aug. 27

It's back to the books for the Avon City Schools -- classes resume for the 1999-2000 school year, Friday, Aug. 27.

Planning Commission meeting

The Avon Planning Commission will meet tonight at 8:30 at Avon City Hall.

Book discussion group

Lorain County Fair schedule

The following is the schedule of events for the 154th Lorain County Fair, Aug. 23 to 29. Gates open at 8 a.m., unless otherwise noted.

Monday, Aug. 23 Opinion 8 a.m. -- 4-H Dog Show. [Image] 9 a.m. -- Jr. Fair fowl show, fruits and vegetable judging.

10 a.m. -- Open class judging - grange- fine arts, baked goods, classes E through J and 70S fancy work and beekeeping.

11 a.m. -- Judging ceramics, hobbies, painting, photography, arts and crafts; HTCS racing.

Noon -- Flag raising ceremony, official opening with 4-H band, crowning of Jr. Fair king and queen.

3 p.m. -- Jr. Fair rabbit breed judging and cavy judging.

6:30 p.m. -- Horse sportmanship award (Ring A).

7 p.m. -- Horsemanship king and queen contest (Ring A); market lamb show (Cow Palace).

7:30 p.m. -- Neal McCoy.

Tuesday, Aug. 24

8 a.m. -- Open class judging - rabbit and cavy.

8:30 a.m. -- Jr. Fair saddle horse grading.

9 a.m. -- Open class judging - silage and hay show, grain show; Jr. Fair judging - goats; Jr. Fair market beef judging; open class sheep, open class judging - beef cattle.

10 a.m. -- Jr. Fair judging - small animal, self-determined pet.

11 a.m. -- HTCS harness racing.

2 p.m. -- Draft horse halter class.

3 p.m. -- Jr. Fair beef breeding judging.

5:45 p.m. -- 4-H band (bldg. 14), ag. products.

7:30 p.m. -- The Charlie Daniels Band.

Wednesday, Aug. 25

8:30 a.m. -- Jr. Fair saddle horse grading.

9 a.m. -- Jr. Fair swing judging, open class judging - dairy cattle, poultry.

9:30 a.m. -- Jr. Fair judging - cat.

10 a.m. -- Open class judging - pony.

11 a.m. to 7 p.m. -- Vote for directors.

11 a.m. -- HTCS harness racing.

12:30 p.m. - Open class judging - flowers.

3 p.m. -- Jr. Fair judging - sheep, draft horse farm harness.

5 p.m. -- 4-H band concert (in park or bldg. 14), ag. products.

6:30 p.m. -- Jr. Fair draft horse show (Ring A).

7:30 p.m. -- Lorrie Morgan.

Thursday, Aug. 26

8:30 a.m. -- Jr. Fair - rabbit showmanship.

9 a.m. -- Jr. Fair judging - dairy cattle (Cow Palace), pony pull.

Noon -- Open draft horse and pony hitch (Grandstand).

2 p.m. -- Jr. Fair auction: meat rabbits, meat chicks, market goats, market lambs.

7:30 p.m. -- Jr. Fair night, free grandstand.

10 p.m. -- Fireworks.

Friday, Aug. 27

9 a.m. -- Market beef judging - Jr. Fair, horse pull.

9:30 a.m. -- Open class - goats.

2 p.m. -- Jr. Fair small animal sweepstakes showmanship.

4 p.m. -- Jr. Fair large animal sweepstakes showmanship.

6 p.m. -- Ohio State tractor pull sanctioned.

Saturday, Aug. 28

9 a.m. -- Jr. Fair livestock auction - market pigs, tractor pull (Lorain County residents only).

1 p.m. -- Jr. Fair auction: Finished market beef, pony fun show.

2 p.m. -- Kiddie pedal pull.

3 p.m. -- Skid steer rodeo.

5 p.m. -- 4-H band concert in park.

7:30 p.m. -- Combine derby.

Sunday, Aug. 29

9 a.m. -- Gates open.

10 a.m. -- Motocross races.

7:30 a.m. -- Mass - church service.

2:15 p.m. -- 4-H band and alumni concert (Cow Palace).

6 p.m. -- Demolition derby.

8:30 p.m. -- Demolition derby, church services
