Preschool story time: Sign up for Fall Preschool Story Time, a free weekly program for 3- through 5-year-olds, at the Avon Branch Library. Monday sessions begin today at 7 p.m. Tuesday sessions begin Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. or 1 p.m. Thursday sessions begin Thursday at 1 p.m. The program features stories and crafts. Step-up club: Kindergarteners through second graders are invited to attend Step-Up Club Wednesday at 6 p.m. at the Lorain Public Library System's Avon Branch Library. The North Coast Regional Chamber of Commerce will be having a luncheon Wednesday [9-24-08] at Swingos Grand Tavern from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Brian McCann, representing the Northern Ohio Commuter Rail Coalition, will be the guest speaker discussing the proposed high-speed rail line. Cost is $15 per person payable by cash or check at the door. It is not necessary to be a Chamber member to attend this event; however, a reservation is required. Fitness classes: The YMCA of Greater Cleveland is offering a new session of adult and teen fitness classes at Liberty Business Park 1, 1260 Moore Road, Avon. Classes include Pilates, Power Sculpt and Step-Sculpt-Glide, among others. Free babysitting is available during all class times. Interested people are encouraged to try any class for free. Canceled: The fall rummage and bake sale by the Ladies Guild of Faith Lutheran Church, Avon, that was scheduled for Oct. 3 and 4 has been canceled.
Kudos: Third and fourth graders at Heritage South Elementary School in Avon were recognized by the Cleveland Indians for having the highest point total of any Cleveland-area school in the team’s High Achievers Program last school year. The students earned 8,775 points by getting all A’s and B’s on a report card, reading three books during a grading period or having perfect attendance.

Fall rummage sale: Holy Trinity Ladies Guild will be hosting its fall rummage sale today from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Tuesday from 9 a.m. to noon at the Knights of Columbus Hall, 1783 Moore Road (north of SR 611, next to BJ's), in Avon.
Quilt talk: Avon Women's Club will meet today at the Avon Senior Center at 7 p.m. The program for the evening will be "Quilts in History" by Elizabeth Sheehe. Guests are always welcome. Entertainment books are still available from all club members, or call Joan at 937-5039.

New members welcome: The Avon/Avon Lake Post 7035 Veterans of Foreign Wars is seeking new members. Veterans can join if they have a campaign medal for overseas service, 30 consecutive days or 60 non-consecutive days in Korea or have ever received hostile fire or imminent danger pay. In addition, a men's auxiliary is available for the sons, fathers or brothers of veterans, and a ladies' auxiliary is available for women with a child, spouse or sibling who qualifies for VFW membership. Team Michael bracelets: The Avon High School Student Council is selling Team Michael bracelets to help honor Michael Sparkman, a 6-year-old Avon boy with stage 4 lymphoblastic b-cell lymphoma. Sales of orange and white rubber bracelets, for $3, will benefit the Michael Sparkman fund. Donations can also be sent to Team Michael, care of Robin Brawner, 36421 South Park Drive, Avon 44011. The Avon Eagles dedicated its football game against Firelands Falcons Oct. 3 to Michael Sparkman. Erin Thorne at 934-7275 is selling bracelets.

Instead, on Thursday, November 6, 2008, at 5:30 pm, the Intersociety (including Avon) will meet for a potluck supper at the Lorain County Metroparks Carlisle Reservation Visitor Center, 12882 Diagonal Road, LaGrange, Ohio 44050.

The Intersociety program, on Thursday, November 6, 2008, will feature John E. Dailey, a former Chief Surveyor, engineer, job estimator, and data researcher for 51 years with Cleveland area firms: the East Ohio Gas Company, Wheeler & Melena, Inc., and Michael Benza & Associates.
Mr. Dailey has long been active in professional societies such as the Professional Land Surveyors of Ohio and the National Society of Professional Surveyors; and he currently edits the monthly newsletter for the Computer Assisted Genealogical Group (CAGG).
His topic for this meeting will be "Migration Routes" which includes the paths taken by pioneer settlers in northeast Ohio.

Take Routes 10/20 west to the Route 301 South (LaGrange Road) exit. Turn left onto 301 South. Drive a short distance to the second intersection on your right, Nickle Plate - Diagonal Road, which is across from the red brick Carlisle Township Fire Department, and drive 0.7 mile to the Duck Pond Picnic Area entrance, which will be on your right. Drive 0.8 mile farther on Diagonal Road and the entrance to the Carlisle Visitor Center will also be on the right.
